Odisha Vigilance Busts Illegal Furniture Manufacturing Unit in Cuttack, Timber Worth ₹4.8 Lakh Seized

The Forest Wing of Odisha Vigilance has busted an alleged illegal furniture manufacturing unit operating in Cuttack district and seized timber and related materials valued at around ₹4.8 lakh, officials said on Thursday.

The raid was carried out near Sofa village under the jurisdiction of Tangi police station following intelligence inputs regarding unauthorised timber processing activities in the area.

Raid Conducted on Illegal Furniture Workshop

According to officials, a joint forest enforcement operation was launched at a furniture manufacturing unit that was allegedly functioning without a valid licence.

During the search, authorities found timber stock stored inside the premises along with additional quantities allegedly hoarded nearby.

Officials said the operation led to the seizure of 19.08 cubic feet of timber from the workshop itself, while another 115.814 cubic feet of valuable timber was recovered from a nearby storage location.

In total, 134.894 cubic feet of timber was seized during the raid.

Timber and Furniture Materials Valued at ₹4.81 Lakh

The Forest Wing estimated the total market value of the seized timber and related materials at approximately ₹4,81,669.

Authorities stated that the unit was allegedly processing and storing timber in violation of forest and trade regulations.

The officials did not immediately disclose the species of timber recovered or the identities of the persons linked to the operation.

Why Illegal Timber Trade Matters

Illegal timber extraction and unauthorised wood-processing units remain a significant concern in several parts of Odisha due to their environmental and economic impact.

Such operations can contribute to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and revenue leakage for the state. Forest officials regularly conduct enforcement drives to curb unlawful logging, transportation, and commercial use of protected timber resources.

Experts say stricter monitoring of timber supply chains and licensing systems is important to prevent illegal trade and protect forest ecosystems.

Investigation Underway

Officials said further investigation is ongoing to trace the origin of the seized timber and identify individuals involved in the operation.

Authorities are also examining whether the unit had links to a larger illegal timber network operating in the region.

Additional legal action is expected based on the findings of the investigation.
