Kolkata Minister Raises Concerns Over Hygiene at Calcutta National Medical College After Tiljala Fire

West Bengal Women and Child Development Minister Agnimitra Paul expressed strong concern over sanitation conditions at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital during a visit to meet victims injured in the Tiljala fire incident.
The minister visited the hospital ward where three people injured in Tuesday’s fire at a leather factory in Kolkata’s Tiljala area are currently undergoing treatment. During the inspection, she reportedly questioned hospital staff after noticing poor hygiene and waste materials scattered inside the ward.
Minister Objects to Unclean Hospital Conditions
According to officials present during the visit, Agnimitra Paul expressed dissatisfaction over garbage found beneath patient beds and in other parts of the ward.
She also raised concerns about used gloves, discarded bedsheets and medical waste lying on the floor, calling for immediate corrective action from hospital authorities.
The minister reportedly instructed hospital staff to clean the ward without delay and improve overall hygiene standards inside the government-run healthcare facility.
She stated that many patients from economically weaker backgrounds rely on public hospitals for treatment and should receive proper medical care in a clean environment.
Tiljala Fire Leaves Two Dead
The hospital visit came a day after a major fire broke out at a leather manufacturing factory in the Tiljala area of Kolkata.
The factory, where bags and shoes were reportedly manufactured, caught fire on Tuesday afternoon. Officials said dense smoke and extreme heat quickly spread through the premises, creating suffocating conditions inside the building.
Two people died in the incident, while several others sustained injuries.
Authorities said three injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.
Police Arrest Factory Owner and Supervisor
Police have arrested the factory owner and a supervisor in connection with the fire incident.
Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest that a short circuit may have triggered the blaze, although officials said a detailed probe is still underway.
Emergency teams and firefighters worked for several hours to control the fire and evacuate workers from the building.
State Government Orders Inquiry
Following the incident, the Chief Minister’s Secretariat constituted a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.
Officials have been directed to submit a detailed report by Wednesday morning. The inquiry is expected to examine possible safety violations, fire preparedness measures and working conditions inside the factory.
Why the Incident Matters
The Tiljala fire has once again drawn attention to industrial safety standards and emergency preparedness in densely populated urban areas.
The incident has also highlighted concerns around the condition of public healthcare facilities, especially during emergencies when government hospitals handle large numbers of patients from lower-income groups.
Experts say proper hospital hygiene is critical not only for patient care but also for preventing infections and maintaining public trust in state-run medical institutions.
Focus on Safety and Public Healthcare
The state government is expected to review both factory safety protocols and healthcare facility management in the aftermath of the incident.
Officials indicated that further action could follow depending on the findings of the fire investigation and hospital inspection reports.
