Heat and Humidity Increase Across South Bengal as North Bengal Remains Under Heavy Rain Alert

Weather conditions across West Bengal are showing a sharp regional contrast, with heat and humidity increasing steadily in south Bengal even as several districts in north Bengal continue to experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at Alipore, Kolkata and surrounding districts are likely to witness warmer and more humid conditions over the next few days due to clear skies and reduced rainfall activity.

At the same time, north Bengal remains under heavy rain alerts, particularly in the Himalayan and sub-Himalayan districts where thunderstorms and strong winds are expected to continue through the week.

Kolkata Records Rising Temperatures

After several days of rain and gusty winds that brought relatively cooler conditions to south Bengal, temperatures have started climbing again across the region.

Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 34.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, while the minimum temperature settled at 26.8 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists said the city experienced bright sunshine from Wednesday morning, with little possibility of rainfall during the day. High moisture levels in the atmosphere are expected to increase humidity-related discomfort, especially during afternoon hours.

The IMD has forecast that temperatures in Kolkata could rise by another 2 to 3 degrees Celsius by Friday.

Dry Weather Likely Across South Bengal

Weather officials said most districts in south Bengal are expected to remain largely dry until Saturday.

The absence of rainfall is likely to push temperatures higher gradually across the region. Western districts of south Bengal may face more intense heat conditions, with dry and hot winds expected during parts of the day.

The changing weather pattern comes as the Bengali month of Baishakh approaches its end, a period typically associated with rising summer temperatures and occasional pre-monsoon storms.

Heavy Rain Continues in North Bengal

In contrast to the warmer conditions in the south, north Bengal continues to witness active rainfall under the influence of unstable weather systems.

The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in districts including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and North Dinajpur.

Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are also likely in several areas.

Heavy rain alerts remain in effect for Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Alipurduar districts through Thursday.

Rainfall Activity May Reduce After Friday

Meteorologists said rainfall intensity in north Bengal is expected to gradually decrease from Friday onward.

However, temperatures across the northern districts could begin rising again after Saturday as rainfall activity weakens.

Officials advised residents in rain-affected districts to remain cautious during thunderstorms and strong wind activity, particularly in hilly and low-lying areas vulnerable to waterlogging or localized disruptions.

Why the Weather Shift Matters

The contrasting weather conditions across West Bengal could have implications for public health, agriculture and transportation.

Rising humidity and heat in south Bengal may increase discomfort levels and raise the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among elderly people, outdoor workers and children.

Meanwhile, continued rainfall in north Bengal could affect road connectivity, tea plantations and daily life in hill and foothill districts.

Weather experts say such regional variations are common during the transition period before the southwest monsoon advances further across eastern India.

Outlook for the Coming Days

The IMD expects south Bengal to remain hot and humid through the weekend, with limited chances of rainfall in most districts.

North Bengal, meanwhile, is likely to continue receiving scattered rainfall and thunderstorms for the next few days before weather conditions gradually stabilise.
