The Election Commission said the phase will cover more than 3.21 crore voters and is expected to be closely contested.

Key Announcements / Highlights

  • Voting will take place across eight districts in South Bengal
  • A total of 3.21 crore registered voters are eligible to cast ballots
  • Over 4.13 lakh first-time voters aged 18–19 will participate
  • 1,448 candidates are contesting the 142 seats
  • More than 41,000 polling stations have been set up

Special arrangements have been made for elderly voters above 85 years, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups to ensure accessible voting.

Official Statement

Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agrawal said authorities have strengthened monitoring and security arrangements to ensure a free and fair voting process.

He stated that the Election Commission will take strict action against any malpractice, including impersonation or attempts to disrupt polling, adding that the system has been designed to maintain transparency and integrity.

Context / Background

The second phase follows the first round of polling held on April 23, which recorded a turnout exceeding 93 percent—one of the highest in the state’s electoral history.

West Bengal’s assembly elections are conducted in phases due to the state’s size and logistical complexity. This year’s contest is being closely watched, with multiple political parties claiming support ahead of the final results scheduled for May 4.

Public Impact

The outcome of the final phase is expected to play a decisive role in determining the composition of the next state government.

To enhance transparency, all polling stations will be monitored through live webcasting. Additionally, 8,845 polling booths will be operated entirely by women staff to encourage greater participation.

Security deployment has been significantly increased, with central armed police forces stationed across sensitive areas. Quick-response teams have also been deployed to manage any incidents swiftly.

Authorities have also taken preventive measures, including detentions of individuals suspected of planning election-related disturbances.

With extensive logistical planning, security deployment, and voter facilitation measures in place, officials expect a smooth polling process on April 29.

The final phase marks a crucial step in the electoral cycle, with results from West Bengal—alongside other states—set to be announced on May 4, offering a clearer picture of the political landscape.
