Jammu Parking Crisis Raised with LG Manoj Sinha; Proposal Suggests Using Flyover Spaces for Parking

BJP spokesperson Gaurav Gupta met Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in Jammu on April 27, raising concerns over increasing traffic congestion and lack of organised parking facilities in the city.

Key Announcements / Highlights

  • A memorandum was submitted highlighting parking shortages in Jammu city.
  • Proposal includes developing parking spaces under existing flyovers.
  • Suggestions include CCTV surveillance, lighting, and smart parking systems.
  • The Lieutenant Governor assured that the matter would be examined.

Official Statement

During the meeting, Gupta outlined concerns about unplanned roadside parking contributing to traffic congestion, particularly in busy commercial areas. He proposed that unused spaces beneath flyovers could be converted into structured parking zones.

The Lieutenant Governor, according to officials, acknowledged the concerns and said the proposals would be reviewed in the interest of improving urban infrastructure.

Proposed Measures

The memorandum recommends conducting a survey of available space under major flyovers in areas such as Kunjwani, Akhnoor Road, and Jewel. It also suggests creating designated parking bays, installing proper lighting and CCTV systems, and introducing smart parking solutions.

Gupta further proposed exploring Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models to support the development and maintenance of these facilities.

Context / Background

Urban centres like Jammu have seen rising vehicle numbers in recent years, putting pressure on existing infrastructure. Limited parking facilities, especially in markets and commercial zones, often lead to roadside parking and traffic disruptions.

City planners in several Indian urban areas have explored the use of under-flyover spaces for parking and other public utilities as a way to optimise land use.

Public Impact

If implemented, the proposal could ease congestion in key areas and improve traffic flow. Organised parking facilities may also enhance safety and convenience for commuters and local businesses.

Smart parking systems and surveillance could further improve management and reduce misuse of public spaces.

The proposal to utilise under-flyover spaces for parking is now under consideration by the administration. Any decision on implementation is expected after further evaluation, as authorities look to address Jammu’s growing traffic and infrastructure challenges.

Separately, Sandeep Sharma also met the Lieutenant Governor during the day.
