Official Statement
Chouhan said rural roads are critical for improving access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and employment. He emphasised that the new phase of PMGSY aims to connect remote and underserved regions, ensuring broader economic participation.
Chief Minister Majhi stated that the programme reflects continued central support for Odisha’s development. He described PMGSY-IV as a step toward integrating remote and hilly areas into the mainstream economy through improved infrastructure.
Context / Background
The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, launched in 2000, is a flagship central scheme aimed at providing all-weather road connectivity to unconnected rural habitations. Over successive phases, the programme has expanded to include upgrades and consolidation of existing road networks.
Odisha, with its mix of coastal plains and tribal-dominated hilly regions, has historically faced connectivity challenges. Improved road infrastructure is seen as a key enabler for service delivery and economic growth in such areas.
Public Impact
The new road projects are expected to reduce travel time and improve access to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities for rural populations. Housing assistance under PMAY-G aims to support low-income families in building permanent homes, while MGNREGA funding provides wage employment in rural areas.
The broader package, including agricultural and livelihood initiatives, may help enhance income opportunities for farmers and self-help groups, particularly in underserved districts.
With the rollout of PMGSY-IV and associated funding announcements, the Centre and state government have outlined a multi-sector development push for Odisha. The effectiveness of these initiatives will depend on timely execution and on-ground implementation in the coming months.
