UP Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak Cuts Official Convoy by 50% Amid Austerity Drive

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak has announced a 50 per cent reduction in the number of vehicles in his official convoy, aligning with the state government’s newly announced austerity measures and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for economic restraint and fuel conservation.
The decision comes a day after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed government departments and officials across the state to adopt austerity measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption and encouraging more efficient use of public resources.
Convoy Reduction Ordered in “National Interest”
In a statement issued in Lucknow on Wednesday, Pathak said the reduction in his official fleet was made in the “national interest” and reflected the Prime Minister’s call for discipline and restraint in daily life.
He instructed officials to immediately cut the number of escort vehicles accompanying his convoy by half.
According to Pathak, the move is intended to support broader efforts to conserve fuel, reduce unnecessary expenditure and encourage responsible resource use.
Government Encourages Lifestyle Changes
The deputy chief minister also highlighted several measures that citizens can adopt to reduce fuel use and dependence on imports.
These included greater use of public transport, metro services and work-from-home arrangements where possible. He also advised limiting the use of private vehicles and reducing discretionary spending that increases import dependence.
Pathak referred to suggestions linked to reducing edible oil consumption, cutting the use of chemical fertilisers and promoting natural farming practices. He also encouraged the use of locally manufactured products over imported or multinational alternatives.
In addition, he called for reduced overseas travel over the coming year as a way to help conserve foreign exchange reserves spent on oil imports.
Push for Eco-Friendly Practices
As part of the austerity campaign, Pathak promoted several environmentally conscious measures that could lower energy consumption and reduce pollution.
These included:
- Carpooling at least once a week
- Shifting to battery-powered or electric vehicles
- Using induction cooktops instead of gas stoves
- Installing rooftop solar panels
He said small behavioural changes at both the government and individual level could collectively contribute to economic stability and environmental sustainability.
Yogi Adityanath Announces Wider Austerity Measures
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday directed an immediate 50 per cent reduction in official convoys across Uttar Pradesh as part of a larger austerity initiative.
The state government has also encouraged departments to increase the use of virtual meetings, public transportation and remote working arrangements wherever feasible.
Officials said the campaign is aimed at promoting cost efficiency, lowering fuel consumption and improving administrative discipline.
Why the Move Matters
The austerity push comes at a time when rising fuel import costs, global economic uncertainty and environmental concerns are placing additional pressure on public finances and energy consumption.
India imports a significant portion of its crude oil requirements, making fuel conservation an important economic issue. Government-led efforts to reduce fuel use and encourage sustainable practices may also support broader climate and energy goals.
Analysts say symbolic steps taken by senior public officials could influence administrative culture and public behaviour, especially if implemented consistently across departments.
Focus on Resource Efficiency and Self-Reliance
The Uttar Pradesh government’s latest measures also align with the Centre’s broader emphasis on self-reliance, energy conservation and sustainable development.
Officials indicated that the austerity campaign may continue in phases, with greater focus on reducing avoidable expenditure and encouraging efficient use of public infrastructure in the coming months.
