Uttar Pradesh Expands Skill Development Push With AI, Robotics and Industry-Focused Training

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a fresh push to strengthen skill development and vocational training, with a focus on emerging technologies, industry partnerships and employment-oriented education. The announcement was made during a “Samvad” dialogue programme organised by the Uttar Pradesh Skill Development Mission (UPSDM) in Gorakhpur on May 12.
The event brought together government officials, industry representatives, private Industrial Training Institute (ITI) operators and training providers to discuss ways to align skill training with future job markets and industrial demand.
Focus on Employment-Oriented Skill Training
Speaking at the programme, Uttar Pradesh Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Vocational Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Kapil Dev Agarwal said the state is working toward becoming the country’s “largest skill hub” by integrating technology-based education with practical employment opportunities.
He said the government’s priority is no longer limited to issuing certificates through training institutes. Instead, the focus has shifted to a “skill-to-employment” approach aimed at helping young people secure jobs after completing training.
According to the minister, Uttar Pradesh currently has more than 300 government ITIs and over 3,000 private ITIs that provide technical and vocational education to millions of students across the state.
AI, Drone Technology and Robotics Introduced in ITIs
A major part of the government’s strategy involves modernising technical education infrastructure.
Agarwal said the state government, through a partnership with Tata Technologies, has upgraded 150 government ITIs with advanced training facilities. The upgraded institutions now offer courses in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), drone technology, robotics, advanced manufacturing and design technologies.
He added that modern laboratories and industry-standard training infrastructure have been developed to improve practical learning. Another 62 ITIs are expected to be included in the project in the coming phase.
The initiative is aimed at preparing students for technology-driven industries and improving employability in sectors expected to see future growth.
Apprenticeship and School-Level Skill Training Expanded
Officials at the event also highlighted the state’s apprenticeship and school-level vocational programmes.
Principal Secretary Dr. Hari Om said skill development should be viewed as a pathway to economic independence rather than only a training exercise. He stressed the importance of integrating vocational learning with mainstream education to meet changing industry requirements.
Mission Director Pulkit Khare said vocational education is now being promoted in schools under “Project Praveen.” Under the initiative, students in secondary and aided schools receive one hour of vocational training after regular classes and can choose training areas based on their interests.
According to the government, more than 2,500 schools have joined the programme and around 2.5 lakh students have enrolled so far.
Khare also said the state recorded over one lakh apprenticeship enrolments last year, which the government claims is the highest in the country.
Digital Platforms Introduced for Career Guidance
The government showcased several digital initiatives designed to improve access to skill training and employment information.
Officials said the “Kaushal Dost” AI chatbot, available through the UPSDM website, is helping students and training institutions with information related to courses and skill programmes.
Another platform, “Kaushal Darpan,” is being used to analyse employment trends and industrial demand using Invest UP data. The aim is to customise training programmes according to district-level employment opportunities.
The government also highlighted the “Skill Disha” online learning platform, which allows students to access training and certification programmes remotely.
Why This Matters
Uttar Pradesh has one of the country’s largest youth populations, making employment generation and workforce readiness a major policy challenge. Industry experts have frequently pointed to the gap between academic education and market-ready skills as a key issue affecting employability.
By introducing technology-based courses and linking training with industry demand, the government is attempting to address this gap while reducing migration from smaller towns and districts to major cities for work opportunities.
Officials said the broader objective is to create local employment opportunities so that trained youth can find jobs closer to their home districts.
Government Pushes Placement-Linked Training
The state government also said it is promoting placement-linked training models to improve employment outcomes after certification.
Under the Deendayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY), eligible rural youth are being offered free residential skill training, including accommodation, food and training support funded by the government.
During the programme, trainees and trainers who performed well at state and national levels were honoured with certificates.
What Happens Next
The Uttar Pradesh government is expected to continue expanding technology-enabled vocational education programmes and industry collaborations in the coming months.
Officials indicated that additional ITIs will be upgraded, more schools will be brought under vocational training initiatives and employment-focused digital platforms will be further integrated into the state’s skill development ecosystem.
The success of these programmes, however, will likely depend on long-term industry participation, quality of training and measurable job placement outcomes for students across the state.
