Post-Poll Violence Triggers Heated Exchange in West Bengal Assembly During Speaker Election Session
A sharp political confrontation broke out in the West Bengal Assembly on Friday during the eighteenth Assembly session, with leaders from both the ruling party and Opposition engaging in a heated debate over allegations of post-poll violence in the state.
The exchange took place during proceedings linked to the election of the new Speaker. While the session initially began on a calm note, tensions rose after Opposition members questioned the state government’s handling of political violence following elections.

During the Assembly discussion, Leader of the Opposition Shovandeb Chattopadhyay accused the state administration of failing to prevent post-poll violence and creating an atmosphere of fear.
Addressing the House, Chattopadhyay said concerns over safety and political intimidation continued to affect several people in the state. He claimed that some families had allegedly been forced to leave their homes after election-related clashes.
The Opposition leader also criticised earlier political assurances regarding public trust and law and order, arguing that fear among residents had increased instead of decreasing.

Suvendu Adhikari Responds in Assembly
Senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari responded immediately to the allegations inside the Assembly.
Adhikari said he had no official information regarding people being displaced from their homes due to post-poll violence. He urged Opposition leaders to report such cases directly to the Director General of Police if they had evidence or complaints.
At the same time, Adhikari referred to investigations linked to the 2021 post-poll violence cases in West Bengal.
He stated that individuals whose names were not included in the FIRs filed during those incidents could return home with administrative support. However, he added that those named in criminal cases would face legal proceedings.
The remarks further intensified the political exchange inside the House.
Nawsad Siddique Also Raises Violence Issue
Indian Secular Front MLA Nawsad Siddique also spoke during the discussion and raised concerns over political violence in the state.
Siddique criticised the handling of violence following the 2021 Assembly elections and claimed that the situation had deeply affected party workers and local political activists.
He said the atmosphere after the previous elections had become so disturbing that he had once considered resigning if it could help prevent violence against workers.
The ISF MLA also alleged that letters sent to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not receive responses.
However, Siddique clarified during the debate that his criticism of the previous government should not be seen as unconditional support for the BJP. He said he would continue to raise issues independently rather than support or oppose any party without reason.
