One Hour, Three Lives: Dare to Donate?

One Hour, Three Lives: Dare to Donate?

New Delhi, June 14, 2025 – Today, as India joins the world in celebrating World Blood Donor Day, a simple question echoes across hospitals, blood banks, and communities: Will you spend one hour to save three lives? Donating blood is a small act with a big impact, and this year’s theme, “Give Blood, Give Hope,” reminds us how every drop counts.

In just 60 minutes, one blood donation can help up to three people – from accident victims to cancer patients and mothers during childbirth. “Many don’t know how easy it is to make a difference,” says Dr. Priya Sharma, a blood bank officer at AIIMS Delhi. “The process is safe, quick, and can truly be a lifeline.”

Across India, blood donation camps are buzzing with energy today. In Ranchi, a two-day camp collected 166 units of blood, with young donors stepping up for the first time. In Mumbai, college students organized a drive, chanting, “Donate blood, be a hero!” Even Union Minister Kiren Rijiju rolled up his sleeve in Arunachal Pradesh, urging others to join the cause.

Yet, India faces a blood shortage. Every year, we need 12 million units but collect only about 10 million. “Summers are tough,” says Anil Kumar, a volunteer at a Chennai blood bank. “Vacations and heat keep donors away, but patients still need blood every day.” This gap leaves hospitals struggling, especially for rare blood types like AB-negative.

Why hesitate? Some fear pain or weakness, but experts say it’s safe. “You lose just 350-450 ml of blood, which your body replaces in days,” explains Dr. Sharma. Donors must be 18-65 years old, weigh over 45 kg, and be healthy. After donating, you get refreshments and a proud feeling of saving lives.

This World Blood Donor Day, India is also celebrating women donors. “Women play a huge role,” says Meena Patel, a regular donor from Ahmedabad. “Our blood helps mothers and babies survive emergencies.” Despite this, only 10% of donors in India are women, and campaigns are encouraging more to step forward.

So, dare to donate? Find a blood camp near you, or visit a hospital blood bank. It takes one hour, no superpowers, just a willing heart. As Kiren Rijiju said today, “Donating blood is real service to humanity.” Will you be the next hero to give hope?

How to Donate:

  • Check local blood banks or camps via apps like Indian Red Cross.
  • Eat well and drink water before donating.
  • Rest for 10 minutes after giving blood.

Let’s make World Blood Donor Day 2025 a turning point. One hour, three lives – the choice is yours.
