At Least 39 Dead, Dozens Injured After High-Speed Train Collision Near Córdoba, Spain
Adamuz, Córdoba — Monday, 19 January 2026 — A catastrophic collision between two high-speed passenger trains in southern Spain has left at least 39 people dead and dozens more injured, authorities confirmed as rescue operations wind down and recovery efforts continue in difficult conditions.
The accident occurred on Sunday evening, 18 January 2026, near the town of Adamuz in the province of Córdoba, on a section of the Madrid–Seville high-speed rail line.
What Happened
Shortly before 7:45 p.m. local time, an Iryo high-speed train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed. Within moments, a Renfe-operated train traveling in the opposite direction from Madrid to Huelva collided with the derailed carriages.
The impact sent the front carriages of the Renfe train down an embankment and caused extensive damage to both trains. Emergency crews described the collision site as chaotic and difficult to access due to its remote location.
Casualties and Injuries
Spanish authorities have confirmed that 39 people were killed in the crash. Rescue and recovery operations have concluded, with officials continuing the painstaking process of identifying the victims.
According to the latest official tallies:
- Deaths: 39 confirmed.
- Injured: Well over 150 people were reported injured in initial tallies, with several dozen in serious condition; many were transported to hospitals across the region for treatment.
- Intensive Care: Health services reported that a number of the injured remained in intensive care units.
Passengers and Trains Involved
The trains involved in the collision were:
- Iryo train 6189, a Frecciarossa 1000 model, operated by private rail company Iryo.
- Renfe service, a Class 120 high-speed train operated by Spain’s national rail operator.
According to official information compiled by authorities, a total of approximately 484 passengers were onboard the two trains when the accident occurred.
Response and Rescue Efforts
Emergency services, including firefighters, police, and medical teams, worked throughout the night to extract survivors and recover the deceased from the wreckage. Spanish civil authorities also established support centers for families seeking information about missing loved ones.
Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, declared three days of national mourning and canceled plans to attend an international forum in order to oversee response efforts and meet with officials at the scene.
Investigation Underway
The Ministry of Transport and Spain’s Railway Accident Investigation Commission have launched a formal probe into the cause of the derailment and collision. Early reports indicate that the derailment took place on a straight section of track that had been recently renovated, and investigators are examining both infrastructure and rolling stock factors.
Transport officials have so far refrained from assigning definitive responsibility, stating that no single cause has yet been confirmed.
Impact on Rail Services
In the aftermath of the crash, high-speed rail services on the Madrid–Andalusia corridor were suspended, with alternative transport arrangements put in place as rail operators assess infrastructure safety and begin cleanup and repair operations.
