Congress Only National Alternative to BJP, Says Pramod Tiwari Amid Debate on Opposition Unity

Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari on Monday said the Congress remains the only political party capable of mounting a nationwide challenge to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), amid ongoing discussions around opposition unity following recent assembly election outcomes.
Speaking to reporters in Mathura after visiting the Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan, Tiwari commented on the political developments in several states, including West Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Tiwari Links TMC Defeat to Lack of Alliance
Referring to the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, Tiwari said the situation may have been different for the All India Trinamool Congress if the party had contested in alliance with the Congress.
According to Tiwari, opposition unity remains essential in states where the BJP has expanded its political influence. He argued that regional parties alone may find it difficult to counter the BJP’s organisational strength across the country.
The Congress leader’s remarks come after the BJP secured a decisive victory in West Bengal, ending the long rule of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and pushing the Trinamool Congress into the opposition.
Criticism of BJP and Election Process
During the interaction with media, Tiwari also criticised the BJP and raised concerns over the functioning of constitutional institutions during elections. He alleged that central agencies and institutions were being misused during the electoral process, a claim frequently raised by opposition parties in recent years.
Tiwari further accused the BJP of depending on leaders who had defected from other parties to occupy key positions, including chief ministerial posts in some states. He claimed such political strategies could eventually create tensions between the BJP and its ideological allies.
However, the BJP has repeatedly rejected allegations of institutional misuse and has maintained that its electoral victories reflect public support for its governance and leadership.
Comments on Kerala and Tamil Nadu Politics
The Rajya Sabha MP also referred to political developments in southern states. He said the Congress performed strongly in Kerala and supported secular political forces in Tamil Nadu.
Tiwari additionally criticised the handling of government formation in Tamil Nadu, alleging delays in inviting the winning alliance to form the government despite its majority support.
Opposition Unity Back in Focus
The Congress leader also endorsed calls for broader opposition coordination against the BJP ahead of future national elections. His remarks align with ongoing efforts among several opposition parties to explore alliances and issue-based cooperation.
Political analysts believe the debate over opposition unity is likely to intensify in the coming months as parties begin preparations for future electoral contests across multiple states.
Why the Statement Matters
Tiwari’s comments reflect the continuing struggle within opposition politics over leadership, alliances and strategy against the BJP’s expanding national presence. The discussion is especially significant after recent assembly election results reshaped political equations in several states.
With regional parties holding strong influence in many parts of India, the question of whether a united opposition can emerge under a common platform remains a key issue in national politics.
