Star Air to Launch Pune–Solapur Flight Service from May 1, Enhancing Regional Connectivity
Star Air has announced the launch of a direct flight service between Pune and Solapur starting May 1, marking the first scheduled air link between the two cities.
The new service is expected to significantly reduce travel time, allowing passengers to cover the distance in approximately 45 minutes, compared to several hours by road or rail.
Key Announcements
The airline confirmed that the Pune–Solapur route will be part of a broader expansion plan enabled by additional operational capacity at Pune Airport.
Airport authorities have approved 15 new flight slots, increasing the total number of available slots from 220 to 235. This expansion has opened up opportunities for airlines to introduce new routes connecting Pune with previously underserved destinations.
In addition to Solapur, new flight connections to cities such as Mangaluru and Bagdogra are also expected to commence.
Official Statement
While detailed operational schedules are yet to be released, airline officials indicated that the service is aimed at improving regional accessibility and offering faster travel options for both business and leisure passengers.
The allocation of additional slots at Pune Airport, according to officials, has been a key factor in enabling this route expansion.
Context and Background
Regional air connectivity in India has been a focus area under the government’s broader aviation strategy, which seeks to link tier-2 and tier-3 cities with major urban centres.
Solapur, an important industrial and textile hub in Maharashtra, has traditionally relied on road and rail networks. The absence of direct flights has limited quick access for business travellers and tourists.
Public Impact
The introduction of the Pune–Solapur flight is expected to benefit business communities, healthcare travellers, and tourists by offering a faster and more convenient mode of transport.
Improved connectivity may also support economic activity in Solapur by making the city more accessible for investment and trade.
For Pune, the expansion strengthens its position as a regional aviation hub with increasing domestic connectivity.
With operations set to begin on May 1, the new Star Air service represents a step toward improving regional air travel infrastructure. As additional routes are introduced, the expanded slot capacity at Pune Airport is likely to play a central role in shaping future connectivity across western and southern India.
