Kostoulas’ Dramatic Overhead Kick Earns Brighton a Late Point Against Bournemouth

BRIGHTON, England — In a pulsating Premier League encounter at the American Express Stadium on Monday, January 19, 2026Brighton & Hove Albion were rescued from defeat by a spectacular late effort from Charalampos Kostoulas, as the fixture against AFC Bournemouth ended in a 1‑1 draw

Brighton appeared set to lose ground in the mid‑table battle after Bournemouth took the lead in the 32nd minutethrough a controversial penalty converted by Marcus Tavernier. The spot‑kick was awarded after referee Paul Tierney, acting on advice from the Video Assistant Referee, reversed an initial decision to book Bournemouth’s Amine Adli for simulation and instead adjudged goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to have fouled the attacker inside the penalty area.

The penalty decision — and Bournemouth’s subsequent lead — drew reaction from the crowd and shaped much of the first half. Bournemouth defended resolutely after the break, limiting Brighton’s clear chances and maintaining their advantage deep into stoppage time.

However, in the first minute of added time, Brighton’s fortunes changed. Substitute 18‑year‑old Greek forward Charalampos Kostoulas seized on a knock‑down from teammate Jan Paul van Hecke, chested the ball, and executed a stunning overhead kick from around 10 yards out that sailed into the top corner beyond Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic

The goal — Kostoulas’s second of the season in English football — sparked wild celebrations among the home supporters and secured a valuable point for the Seagulls. It also extended Brighton’s unbeaten run to five matches in league play.

After the match, Brighton captain Lewis Dunk hailed the strike as extraordinary, highlighting Kostoulas’s potential, while Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola acknowledged the quality of the goal despite lamenting the late turnaround.

The draw leaves Brighton in 12th place in the Premier League standings, three points clear of Bournemouth in 15th, with both clubs continuing their fight for league stability as the season progresses.
