Frederic Soyez Named Head Coach of India Junior Men’s Hockey Team Ahead of 2036 Olympic Vision
Hockey India has appointed experienced French coach Frederic Soyez as the new head coach of the Indian junior men’s hockey team, marking a significant move in the federation’s long-term preparation strategy for the 2036 Olympics.
The announcement was made on Thursday, with Hockey India describing the appointment as part of its broader effort to strengthen player development and create a sustainable high-performance structure for Indian hockey.
Soyez brings more than three decades of experience as both an international player and coach, having worked with some of Europe’s leading hockey programmes.
Experienced International Coach Takes Charge
Before moving into coaching, Soyez represented France in international hockey for 15 years. Between 1995 and 2010, he played 196 international matches and scored 195 goals for the French national side.
Over the last 15 years, he has coached the senior national teams of both France and Spain. He has also been part of three Olympic campaigns, guiding Spain at the 2016 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Olympics, and coaching France during the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Under his leadership, Spain won a silver medal at the 2019 European Championship and reached the quarterfinals in two consecutive Olympic Games.
Strong Record in Youth Development
One of the key reasons behind Soyez’s appointment is his reputation for developing young players and building competitive junior teams.
He guided France to a silver medal at the 2013 FIH Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup held in Delhi. More recently, he coached the French under-18 side to a runner-up finish at the 2025 European Championship.
Soyez also served as High-Performance Director of the French Hockey Federation from 2021 to 2024, where he oversaw athlete development systems and long-term performance planning.
His coaching résumé includes participation in two FIH Men’s Hockey World Cups and six European Championships.
