IPL 2026 Orange and Purple Cap Races Intensify After Gujarat Titans’ Win Over Sunrisers Hyderabad

The race for the Orange Cap and Purple Cap in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 tightened further on Tuesday after Gujarat Titans defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in a match that reshaped the tournament’s leading run-scorer and wicket-taker standings.

Gujarat Titans opener Sai Sudarshan continued his strong run of form with another half-century, while South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada delivered a key spell that brought him level with Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the Purple Cap race.

Sai Sudarshan Continues Remarkable Batting Form

Sai Sudarshan scored 61 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad, registering his third consecutive fifty and fourth half-century in his last five matches.

The innings briefly took the Gujarat Titans batter to the top of the Orange Cap standings before Sunrisers Hyderabad wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen reclaimed the lead later in the match. Klaasen added 14 runs to take his season tally to 508 runs.

Sai Sudarshan now sits second with 501 runs, making Klaasen and Sudarshan the only two players to cross the 500-run mark so far this season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma remains third in the standings with 481 runs despite managing only six runs in the latest fixture.

Delhi Capitals batter KL Rahul occupies fourth place with 477 runs, while Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill rounds out the top five with 467 runs.

Rabada Matches Bhuvneshwar’s Wicket Count

Kagiso Rabada played a crucial role in Gujarat Titans’ victory with figures of 3 for 28 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The South African pacer dismissed Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and R. Smaran during the powerplay, helping Gujarat gain early control of the match.

Rabada’s performance lifted his season tally to 21 wickets, equal to Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s total in the Purple Cap standings.

However, Bhuvneshwar continues to hold the Purple Cap due to his superior economy rate of 7.46, compared with Rabada’s 9.15.

Competition Tightens Among Leading Bowlers

Chennai Super Kings pacer Anshul Kamboj is currently third in the Purple Cap race with 19 wickets.

A group of bowlers are tied next on 16 wickets, including Lucknow Super Giants’ Prince Yadav, Gujarat Titans spinner Rashid Khan and Sunrisers Hyderabad bowler Ishan Malinga.

Rashid Khan added one wicket in the latest match, while Ishan Malinga went wicketless against Gujarat Titans.

Gujarat Titans Bowlers Gain Momentum

Two more Gujarat Titans bowlers climbed the wicket charts after the match.

Prasidh Krishna, returning after nearly a month on the sidelines, picked up two wickets to move to 14 wickets for the season.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Jason Holder has emerged as an important contributor with 13 wickets in just six appearances this season.

Prasidh Krishna and Holder are currently placed ninth and tenth respectively in the Purple Cap standings.

Why the Orange and Purple Cap Races Matter

The Orange Cap and Purple Cap remain two of the IPL’s most closely watched individual honours, recognising the tournament’s leading run-scorer and wicket-taker.

Strong performances in these standings often reflect a player’s consistency and influence on match results during the season.

With the IPL 2026 league stage entering a decisive phase, the competition among top batters and bowlers is expected to intensify further as teams push for playoff qualification.

Playoff Race Adds Pressure

As the tournament approaches its final stages, every performance is becoming increasingly important for both team standings and individual milestones.

Players like Sai Sudarshan, Heinrich Klaasen and Kagiso Rabada are likely to remain central figures in the coming matches as franchises battle for momentum ahead of the playoffs.
