Canada Offers LNG Supply to India as Iran–Israel Conflict Raises Energy Concerns
Canada has offered to expand energy cooperation with India by supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG), as the ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel raise concerns about global fuel supply chains.
In a video message, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada is prepared to support India’s growing energy demand by exporting LNG. He described Canada as an “energy superpower” and highlighted the country’s capacity to supply natural gas to international markets.
India’s LNG Import Dependence
India is currently the world’s fourth-largest importer of liquefied natural gas. According to industry data, nearly 60 percent of its LNG imports come from West Asian countries.
Energy analysts note that any disruptions in shipments from the Gulf region can affect supply stability for countries that rely heavily on those sources. As a result, alternative suppliers are often considered to reduce risks associated with geopolitical tensions.
Role of LNG in India’s Energy Mix
LNG plays a key role in India’s energy sector. It is widely used for electricity generation and supports several industries, including chemical manufacturing, fertilizer production, and paper processing.
The fuel is also used for industrial heating and is increasingly being adopted in heavy-duty transport and maritime operations because it burns more cleanly than some traditional fuels.
One advantage of LNG is that it can be cooled and stored in liquid form, making it easier to transport over long distances through specialised shipping infrastructure.
Potential for Energy Diversification
Experts say importing LNG from additional sources could help India diversify its energy supply and reduce reliance on a single region. However, no formal agreement or timeline has been announced regarding potential LNG exports from Canada to India.
Officials from both countries have not yet provided details on any proposed contracts or infrastructure plans required for such shipments.
The development comes as governments worldwide continue to monitor energy markets amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
