Who Is Pawan Kumar Chandana? Former ISRO Scientist Leading India’s Private Rocket Venture
Pawan Kumar Chandana, a former scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has become a prominent figure in India’s emerging private space industry. Chandana is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Skyroot Aerospace, a Hyderabad-based startup preparing to launch Vikram-1, which is expected to be the first privately developed orbital rocket from India.
Chandana joined ISRO in 2012, driven by a strong interest in rocket technology and space exploration. After working with the national space agency, he later decided to move into the private sector with the goal of building a global space technology company focused on satellite launch services.
Founding Skyroot Aerospace
Skyroot Aerospace was established in 2018 with a focus on developing launch vehicles designed for small satellite missions. The company aims to make access to space quicker and more cost-effective for commercial and research customers.
The company is currently preparing for the launch of its Vikram-1 rocket, which is designed to carry satellites into orbit. If successful, the mission would mark a significant step for private space companies operating in India.
Growth of India’s Private Space Sector
India has opened parts of its space sector to private participation in recent years, allowing startups and private companies to build rockets, satellites, and related technologies alongside government-led missions. Industry observers say this policy shift has encouraged new space startups and investment in the sector.
According to company estimates, Skyroot Aerospace is currently valued at about $527 million (around ₹9,226 crore).
Competition in the Global Launch Market
Private space companies across the world are competing to provide launch services for satellites. Companies such as SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, have expanded the commercial launch market in recent years.
Entrepreneurs like Chandana are working to position Indian startups in this global industry by developing launch systems that can support the growing demand for satellite deployment.
With the planned launch of Vikram-1, Skyroot Aerospace aims to demonstrate the capabilities of India’s private space sector and expand its role in the international space technology market.
