Ladakh to Get Five New Districts as LG Vinai Kumar Saxena Approves Administrative Reorganisation

He added that the reorganisation aligns with the development vision of Narendra Modi and has been supported by the Union Home Ministry under the leadership of Amit Shah. Context / Background
Before this decision, Ladakh had only two districts—Leh and Kargil—despite being India’s largest Union Territory by area. With a population of around 2.74 lakh, according to the 2011 Census, Ladakh has vast, sparsely populated regions with difficult terrain.
The Union Territory was created in 2019 after the reorganisation of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, following the abrogation of Article 370. Since then, Ladakh has been directly administered by the central government.

The creation of additional districts is expected to reduce administrative distances for residents, especially those living in remote regions. Smaller administrative units can improve access to government services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.
