Uttar Pradesh Startup Develops Advanced Drone Technology, Signals Growth in Defence Innovation Ecosystem
A startup based in Lucknow has developed an advanced unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), highlighting the growing role of innovation and startups in Uttar Pradesh’s evolving defence technology ecosystem.
The development comes amid broader efforts by the state government to promote defence manufacturing and attract technology-driven enterprises.
Key Developments
The company, Hoverit, founded by three young entrepreneurs, has introduced a drone named “Divyastra MK-1,” designed for both surveillance and tactical operations.
According to details shared by the company, the UAV is equipped with artificial intelligence-based systems and offers an operational range of up to 500 kilometres, with an endurance of around five hours. It can reportedly operate at altitudes of up to 10,000 feet and carry a payload of up to 15 kilograms.
The firm also claims that the system is designed to be cost-effective compared to similar technologies currently available in the market.
Expansion Plans and Future Projects
The startup is currently working on an upgraded version, “MK-2,” which is expected to significantly extend operational capabilities, including a higher payload capacity and longer range.
In addition, the company is setting up a manufacturing facility within the state’s defence corridor, with a targeted production capacity of around 20 drones per month.
Apart from the flagship model, the firm has developed multiple UAV platforms tailored for different uses, including surveillance drones, payload-carrying systems, and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft. It is also working on decoy drones and ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) systems.
Official Statement
The founders of the startup have attributed their growth to supportive policy measures and infrastructure initiatives in the state. They indicated that improved access to resources and industry support has enabled faster development and scaling of their technology.
Context and Background
Uttar Pradesh has been promoting itself as a defence manufacturing hub through initiatives such as the Defence Corridor project, which aims to create an integrated ecosystem for defence production.
The initiative is part of India’s broader push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing, encouraging domestic innovation and reducing dependence on imports.
Public Impact
Developments in indigenous drone technology have implications for both national security and economic growth. Advanced UAV systems are increasingly used for surveillance, logistics, and tactical operations, making them a key component of modern defence strategies.
At the same time, the rise of startups in this sector is generating employment opportunities and fostering a technology-driven industrial base.
The emergence of startups like Hoverit reflects a broader shift in Uttar Pradesh’s industrial landscape, with increased focus on high-technology sectors. As production capabilities expand and new systems are developed, such initiatives could contribute to strengthening India’s domestic defence manufacturing capabilities in the coming years.
