Thunderstorms, Gusty Winds Forecast Across West Bengal; Kalbaishakhi Conditions Likely

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, gusty winds and rainfall across multiple districts of West Bengal in the coming days. The weather pattern is linked to seasonal Kalbaishakhi storms, which are common during the pre-monsoon period in eastern India.

Key Highlights

  • Thunderstorms and rain expected across south and north Bengal
  • Wind speeds may reach 50–60 kmph in several districts
  • Possibility of lightning and hailstorms in some regions
  • Weather conditions disrupted flight operations on Thursday
  • Rain likely to bring temporary relief from rising temperatures

Weather Forecast for South Bengal

According to the IMD, districts in south Bengal are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds on Friday. Wind speeds could reach 50–60 kmph in some areas, while Kolkata and nearby regions may see gusts of 40–50 kmph along with lightning.

Rainfall is expected to continue into Saturday in districts such as Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur and West Burdwan. Some areas may also experience isolated hailstorms.

Conditions in North Bengal

In north Bengal, districts including Darjeeling and Kalimpong are likely to witness thunderstorms and possible hailstorms. Heavy rainfall is forecast in parts of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar.

Strong winds of up to 60 kmph are expected in several districts, including Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri. Meanwhile, North and South Dinajpur, along with Malda, may experience moderate thunderstorms with slightly lower wind speeds.

Official Advisory

Weather officials have advised residents to remain cautious during the period of adverse weather. People have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms and to take precautions against lightning strikes.

The recent spell of bad weather has already impacted flight operations, with disruptions reported on Thursday.

Context and Background

Kalbaishakhi, also known as Nor’westers, are intense localised storms that typically occur in eastern India during March to May. These storms are characterised by sudden rainfall, strong winds, lightning and sometimes hail.

While they can cause temporary disruptions, they also play a role in cooling temperatures ahead of the monsoon season.

Public Impact

The expected rainfall is likely to bring short-term relief from heat conditions in the region. However, strong winds and lightning may pose risks to infrastructure, agriculture and public safety.

Transport services, including flights, may continue to face disruptions if conditions worsen.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as the weather system develops. With thunderstorms expected to persist over the next few days, residents across West Bengal are advised to stay updated with official forecasts and follow safety guidelines.
