Experts Suggest Iran May Be Using China’s BeiDou Satellite System for Precision Strikes
Western analysts say the accuracy of recent attacks in the Gulf may indicate the use of advanced satellite navigation technology
Western intelligence experts have suggested that Iran may be using China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System to guide missiles and drones in attacks targeting military assets in the Gulf region.
According to analysts, the level of precision observed in certain strikes against facilities linked to the United States in the Middle East suggests the use of satellite-based navigation systems. Experts say such accuracy is typically achieved through global navigation systems such as the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) or China’s BeiDou network.
Former French intelligence official Alain Juillet said in a recent podcast discussion that the accuracy of Iranian missile attacks could indicate reliance on satellite navigation technology. He noted that Iran does not have direct access to the U.S. GPS network, raising the possibility that alternative systems such as BeiDou may be used.
The BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, also known as BDS, is China’s global satellite navigation network that provides positioning, navigation and timing services. The system’s latest generation, BDS-3, offers worldwide coverage and capabilities similar to other major navigation systems.
Security analysts say satellite navigation technology can significantly enhance the precision of missiles and drones by providing accurate location and guidance data during flight. However, there has been no official confirmation from either Iran or China regarding the use of the BeiDou system for military targeting.
The claims come amid heightened regional tensions involving Israel and Iran, as well as broader security concerns across the Middle East where U.S. military forces are deployed.
Officials from the countries involved have not publicly confirmed the allegations, and independent verification of the claims remains limited. Analysts say further evidence would be required to conclusively determine whether the BeiDou system is being used in the reported strikes.
