Senior IPS Officer Siddh Nath Gupta Appointed West Bengal’s New DGP Ahead of 2026 Assembly Elections

Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Siddh Nath Gupta has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal, ahead of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly election 2026. The appointment was made following directions issued by the Election Commission of India as part of administrative changes in the poll-bound state.

Gupta, a 1992-batch officer of the Indian Police Service, replaces Piyush Pandey in the role. The decision comes as the Election Commission reviewed key administrative positions in West Bengal in preparation for the upcoming elections.

According to officials, such transfers and appointments are routine measures undertaken by the Election Commission to ensure neutrality and effective administration during the electoral process.

Gupta brings extensive experience in law enforcement and has served in several senior positions within the West Bengal Police. Over the course of his career, he has held roles including Superintendent of Police (SP), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Inspector General of Police (IGP), and Additional Director General of Police (ADG).

The Election Commission oversees election preparations in states going to the polls and periodically reviews administrative and law enforcement leadership to ensure adherence to election guidelines.

The West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections are scheduled to take place in 2026, and preparations for the electoral process are underway under the supervision of the Election Commission.
