LPG Prices Reportedly Rise in Black Market as Middle East Conflict Raises Supply Concerns in India
Reports from parts of India indicate that liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders are being sold at higher prices in informal markets amid concerns about supply disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel.
According to market reports cited by local traders and businesses, the conflict in the Middle East has affected some fuel shipments from the Gulf region, raising concerns about possible supply constraints. These concerns have reportedly triggered panic buying in certain areas and contributed to the emergence of higher prices outside the official distribution system.
Reports of Higher Unofficial Prices
In several cities, traders and small business owners say they are facing difficulty obtaining LPG cylinders through regular supply channels. As a result, some sellers in informal markets have reportedly raised prices significantly.
Industry sources and local vendors report that commercial LPG cylinders are being sold in some cases for between ₹3,200 and ₹5,000 per unit in unofficial markets. These prices are substantially higher than standard commercial LPG rates.
Impact on Small Businesses
Small food vendors, street stalls, and restaurants have been among those most affected, according to local business operators. Some vendors in the Delhi–NCR region said they are struggling to obtain cooking gas, even at elevated prices.
Restaurant owners and street vendors reported that the rising costs have forced some establishments to reduce operations or temporarily close. Others said they are attempting to manage with limited supplies while waiting for normal distribution to resume.
Reports from Multiple Cities
Similar concerns have been reported in several major urban centers, including Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru, where traders say demand for LPG cylinders has increased in recent days.
Some commercial establishments have also reportedly turned to purchasing domestic LPG cylinders, which are typically subsidized for household use, due to difficulties in accessing commercial supplies.
Supply Concerns Linked to Global Developments
Energy analysts note that tensions in the Middle East can influence global fuel supply chains, particularly because the region plays a key role in energy exports. However, official confirmation of widespread LPG shortages in India has not been announced by authorities.
Government agencies and oil marketing companies have not issued statements indicating any nationwide disruption in LPG supply as of now.
For many businesses, the situation remains uncertain as they monitor developments related to the conflict and its potential impact on energy shipments to India.
