Dussehra: Festival of Victory, Tradition and Unity in IndiaBy Staff Reporter

Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is one of India’s most celebrated festivals, symbolising the victory of good over evil. Observed on the tenth day of the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin (September–October), the festival comes after nine days of Navratri, which honours the divine feminine energy.

Mythological significance

Dussehra is rooted in two central narratives from Hindu tradition. In northern India, it marks Lord Rama’s triumph over the demon king Ravana, as described in the Ramayana. Effigies of Ravana, along with those of his brother Kumbhakarna and son Meghnad, are burnt in public gatherings, accompanied by fireworks and plays called Ramlila. In southern and eastern India, the day celebrates Goddess Durga’s victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, highlighting the triumph of Shakti (divine feminine power) over destructive forces.

Regional variations

India’s diversity is reflected in how Dussehra is celebrated across states.

  • North India: Cities such as Delhi, Varanasi and Lucknow host large-scale Ramlila performances, drawing thousands of spectators.
  • West Bengal and Odisha: The day coincides with the conclusion of Durga Puja, marked by the grand immersion (Visarjan) of Durga idols.
  • Karnataka: Mysuru’s Dussehra is world-renowned, with a royal procession featuring caparisoned elephants, folk music and cultural performances.
  • Maharashtra and Gujarat: People exchange leaves of the apta tree, symbolising gold and prosperity.

Social and cultural importance

Dussehra is not just a religious observance but also a cultural and community event. Families come together to attend fairs, processions and plays. The burning of Ravana’s effigies in open grounds also serves as a symbolic reminder of moral values, urging society to stand against injustice, greed and falsehood.

Economic impact

The festival season, which includes Navratri, Dussehra and later Diwali, significantly boosts India’s economy. Retail, transport, tourism, and small businesses experience a surge in demand. Markets witness increased sales of clothing, jewellery, electronics and festive goods. E-commerce platforms also report record transactions during this period.

A message of resilience

In contemporary times, Dussehra continues to resonate beyond religion. It is often interpreted as a call for personal renewal — the destruction of negative habits and the reaffirmation of truth and righteousness. Leaders and social organisations frequently use the occasion to spread awareness on social issues, linking the symbolic victory of good to modern challenges such as corruption, inequality and environmental degradation.

Dussehra remains an enduring festival that blends mythology, culture, community and economy. Its message of good triumphing over evil transcends religious boundaries, making it a unifying celebration across India. Whether through the burning of Ravana effigies, the immersion of Durga idols or royal processions in Mysuru, the festival underscores a timeless truth — that justice, courage and truth ultimately prevail.
