Kadapa, July 8, 2025: On the 76th birth anniversary of his father, the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy led a heartfelt tribute at YSR Ghat in Idupulapaya, YSR Kadapa district. The event, filled with prayers and silent reflection, drew thousands of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) supporters, leaders, and family members. But behind Jagan’s emotional words and solemn gestures, many are asking: Is there a deeper message in this annual ritual?
Jagan, joined by his mother YS Vijayamma and wife YS Bharati, laid a wreath at his father’s grave and sat in quiet remembrance. His social media post, “Miss You Dad,” struck a chord with supporters, reminding them of YSR’s towering legacy as a leader who championed farmers, healthcare, and the poor. YSRCP leaders hailed the late chief minister’s schemes, like Arogyasri, as life-changing, with one supporter saying, “YSR’s vision still guides us, and Jagan is carrying it forward.”
Yet, this year’s tribute comes at a critical time for Jagan and the YSRCP. After a major electoral loss in 2024, the party is struggling to regain its footing. Political analysts see Jagan’s emotional tribute as more than just a personal moment—it’s a calculated move to rally his base. “Jagan is invoking YSR’s legacy to remind people of the YSRCP’s roots in public welfare,” said political observer Ramesh Naidu. “It’s a way to reconnect with voters who feel let down.”
The event wasn’t without its share of drama. Jagan’s sister, YS Sharmila, now the Andhra Pradesh Congress chief, held a separate tribute at the same site. The siblings, divided by politics since 2019, avoided crossing paths, highlighting their strained relationship. Sharmila’s own tribute, where she cut a cake with Vijayamma, was seen as an attempt to claim YSR’s legacy for the Congress. “Both are using YSR’s name to strengthen their political identities,” Naidu added.

Jagan’s recent actions add fuel to the speculation. His statewide tours in Kurnool, Prakasam, and Guntur have drawn crowds, showing he still commands loyalty. At a youth wing meeting last week, he urged supporters to expose the “anti-people policies” of the current NDA government. Could his tribute to YSR be a signal of a bigger comeback plan? “Jagan is rebuilding trust,” said YSRCP leader K. Suresh. “He’s showing he’s still the son of YSR, fighting for the common man.”
Others, however, see it differently. Critics argue Jagan’s emotional displays are a distraction from recent controversies, like the tragic death of a supporter during a rally in Palnadu. “He’s using YSR’s legacy to shift focus from his failures,” said TDP worker Anil Kumar. The public’s mixed reactions reflect the polarized mood in Andhra Pradesh.
As the dust settles on YSR’s birth anniversary, one thing is clear: Jagan’s tribute is both a son’s love for his father and a leader’s strategy to keep his party alive. Whether it’s a genuine moment of grief or a clever political move, only time will tell. For now, YSR’s legacy remains a powerful force, shaping Andhra Pradesh’s politics and keeping Jagan in the spotlight.
