Heavy Rain and Snow Disrupt Kashmir; Baramulla Records Highest Rainfall

Several parts of Jammu and Kashmir witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over the past 24 hours, with some higher-altitude areas also receiving light snowfall, according to the Meteorological Department.

The adverse weather conditions led to the temporary closure of the Srinagar–Leh highway, a key route connecting the Kashmir Valley with Ladakh.

Key Announcements / Highlights

  • Baramulla recorded the highest rainfall at 73 mm
  • Snowfall reported in higher reaches of Kashmir Valley
  • Srinagar–Leh highway closed due to weather conditions
  • Erratic weather expected to continue till April 10

Among major locations, Baramulla received the highest precipitation, followed by Poonch and Rajouri.

Rainfall and Temperature Details

In the Kashmir division, Srinagar recorded over 31 mm of rainfall, while other areas such as Qazigund, Pahalgam, Kupwara, and Kokernag also reported moderate precipitation.

Minimum temperatures in the Kashmir region remained slightly above normal, while parts of the Jammu division recorded temperatures below seasonal averages. Gulmarg reported the lowest temperature in the valley at sub-zero levels, while Bhaderwah was the coldest in the जम्मु region.

Official Forecast and Advisory

The Meteorological Department has forecast continued unstable weather conditions across the region until April 10.

Light rain or snow is expected intermittently over the next few days, particularly during late afternoons. Between April 3 and 4, more widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are likely across multiple areas.

Authorities have also issued advisories warning of thunderstorms and strong winds on specific days, urging residents to remain cautious.

Context / Background

Weather patterns in Jammu and Kashmir during the transition from winter to spring often bring a mix of rain and snowfall, especially in higher altitudes. These conditions can disrupt transport and daily life, particularly on key mountain routes like the Srinagar–Leh highway.

Such fluctuations also play a role in replenishing water resources, including rivers and glaciers, which are critical for agriculture and hydroelectric power in the region.

Public Impact

The ongoing weather conditions have immediate implications for transport, tourism, and daily commuting. Road closures and reduced visibility can affect travel plans, while snowfall in higher areas may delay logistics and supply movement.

At the same time, the precipitation may benefit agriculture by improving soil moisture ahead of the upcoming growing season.

With unsettled weather expected to persist for the next several days, residents and travellers in Jammu and Kashmir are advised to stay updated with official forecasts and plan accordingly. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as intermittent rain and snowfall are likely to affect different parts of the region through early April.
