Pune to Get 31-km Elevated Flyover Under ₹45,000 Crore Highway Plan, Says Nitin Gadkari
The central government has announced highway infrastructure projects worth about ₹45,000 crore for Pune, including a proposed 31-kilometre elevated flyover that officials say could become the longest in India once completed.
The announcement was made by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari during a review of ongoing highway works in the region. According to the minister, the projects are intended to address traffic congestion and improve connectivity in and around the rapidly growing city.
Major Flyover Planned on Pune–Shirur Corridor
Among the key projects is a 31-km elevated flyover planned along the Pune–Shirur highway. Officials said the structure is designed to ease traffic movement on one of the busiest corridors connecting Pune with nearby industrial areas and eastern districts of Maharashtra.
According to project details shared during the announcement, the elevated corridor is expected to reduce travel time on the route, which can currently take around 90 minutes during peak traffic conditions.
Additional Highway Projects Announced
In addition to the flyover, the government outlined other road infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening the regional transport network.
These include a new elevated road connecting Pune with the industrial hub of Chakan and a 31.5-km highway project linking Pune with Solapur. Officials said the projects are part of a broader plan to improve road connectivity between key urban and industrial centres in Maharashtra.
Implementation by National and State Agencies
The projects are expected to be developed jointly by the National Highways Authority of India and the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation.
According to Gadkari, foundation stones for several of the proposed projects are likely to be laid in the near future once planning and approvals are finalized.
Focus on Reducing Traffic and Pollution
Officials said the infrastructure upgrades are intended to improve traffic flow in and around Pune, where vehicle numbers have increased significantly in recent years. By providing elevated corridors and expanded highway capacity, authorities expect the projects to help reduce travel delays and vehicle congestion.
Government representatives also said improved road connectivity could support industrial transport and logistics in surrounding regions.
Further details regarding timelines, construction phases, and completion schedules are expected to be released as project planning progresses.
