The Centre has released ₹1,561.53 crore to five states under the revamped Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 for the financial year 2025–26, following approval by the Union Cabinet and compliance with reform-linked conditions.

The funding is intended to strengthen rural drinking water infrastructure and accelerate the delivery of safe tap water to households in selected Gram Panchayats.

Official Statement

The Ministry of Jal Shakti said the funds were released only after states met mandatory conditions, including signing reform-linked agreements and ensuring transparency in project tracking and financial reporting.

Union Minister C. R. Patil подчеркed in a recent meeting with state counterparts that water supply remains a state subject, and the success of the mission depends on accountability at the state and local levels.

He also highlighted the need for time-bound implementation and community participation to ensure long-term sustainability of water supply systems.

Context / Background

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Narendra Modi, approved Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 earlier this month with a significantly enhanced outlay of ₹8.69 lakh crore. The Centre’s share stands at ₹3.59 lakh crore, marking a substantial increase from the original allocation approved in 2019.

Unlike the earlier phase, the updated mission places greater emphasis on service delivery—ensuring not just infrastructure creation but also reliable water supply, maintenance systems, and institutional reforms.

States are required to meet several benchmarks before receiving funds, including registering projects in a GIS-based asset system, submitting technical certifications, and reconciling expenditures.

Public Impact

The funding is expected to directly benefit rural households by improving access to safe and reliable drinking water. The mission aims to cover over 19 crore rural homes by December 2028.

For local communities, the shift toward sustainability and community-led management means greater involvement in maintaining water systems, potentially improving long-term service quality.
