Eid-ul-Fitr 2026 Moon Sighting Updates: Countries Await Shawwal Crescent Confirmation
Authorities across multiple countries are preparing to observe the crescent moon that marks the beginning of Shawwal and the end of Ramadan, which determines the date of Eid-ul-Fitr in 2026.
In Saudi Arabia, the Supreme Court has called on citizens to sight the Shawwal crescent moon on the evening of March 18. The official announcement will determine whether Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated the following day or after an additional day of fasting.
Several Gulf nations, including the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, are expected to align their Eid celebrations with Saudi Arabia, depending on the outcome of the moon sighting.
In South Asia, countries such as India and Pakistan will rely on their respective moon sighting committees for confirmation. Religious authorities in these countries typically announce Eid after local verification of the crescent moon.
Meanwhile, Iran follows its own astronomical and religious processes for moon sighting, which may result in a different date for Eid compared to other regions.
According to customary practice, if the crescent moon is sighted on March 18, Eid-ul-Fitr will be observed on March 19. If the moon is not visible, Ramadan will complete 30 days, and Eid will be celebrated on March 20.
Officials have emphasized that the final date of Eid-ul-Fitr will be confirmed only after verified moon sighting announcements from relevant authorities in each country.
