LPG Shortage Amid Iran–Israel Tensions Impacts Food Delivery Workers in India

A shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) linked to the ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel has begun affecting restaurant operations in parts of India, leading to a sharp decline in orders for food delivery workers.

Delivery partners associated with Zomato and Swiggy have reported a noticeable drop in daily deliveries as several restaurants reduce their operations due to limited availability of cooking gas.

According to workers cited in reports, the number of orders handled by some delivery partners has fallen significantly. Many workers who previously completed around 30 deliveries a day say their daily orders have dropped to between five and ten.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas is widely used in commercial kitchens across India for cooking. When supply becomes limited, restaurants may reduce menu offerings, shorten operating hours, or temporarily suspend service. This directly affects the volume of food orders placed through delivery platforms.

A gig workers’ union representing delivery personnel has urged the government and platform companies to address the issue. The union has called for measures to ensure a steady supply of LPG and support for workers whose earnings have declined due to reduced demand.

As of now, no official announcement has been made regarding relief measures. Industry observers say continued disruptions in energy supply could further affect restaurant operations and the broader food delivery ecosystem if the shortages persist.
