IndiGo Launches Daily Non-Stop Kolkata–Shanghai Flights to Boost Connectivity with China

IndiGo has launched a daily non-stop flight service between Kolkata and Shanghai, expanding its international network and strengthening air connectivity between India and China. The service commenced on March 29, according to the airline.

Key Highlights

  • Daily direct flights introduced between Kolkata and Shanghai
  • Kolkata becomes a key hub for India–China connectivity
  • Route operated using Airbus A320neo aircraft
  • Total IndiGo flights to China rise to 21 per week

Flight Operations and Schedule

The new route will be serviced by Airbus A320neo aircraft, catering to both business and leisure travellers. According to the airline, the outbound flight departs Kolkata late at night and arrives in Shanghai early the next morning, while the return service operates on a morning schedule, reaching Kolkata before midday.

Official Statement

A senior company official said the launch reflects growing demand for direct connectivity between India and China. The airline noted that the route is part of its broader strategy to expand international operations and improve access between major commercial centres.

Expansion of India–China Network

With this addition, Kolkata becomes the second Indian city after existing routes to offer direct connectivity to Shanghai under IndiGo’s network. The airline has also resumed services to Guangzhou and expanded operations from Delhi, increasing its overall weekly flights to China.

The airline stated that the Kolkata hub will enable passengers from cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Jaipur, and Bhubaneswar to connect more easily to Shanghai.

Context and Background

Direct air routes play a key role in strengthening trade, tourism, and people-to-people ties between countries. India and China, as major Asian economies, rely on such connectivity for business exchanges and supply chain linkages.

Kolkata’s strategic location in eastern India makes it a natural gateway for flights to East and Southeast Asia.

Public Impact

The new service is expected to benefit business travellers, exporters, and tourists by reducing travel time and improving convenience. Enhanced connectivity may also support trade relations and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

For passengers in eastern and central India, the route provides an additional international travel option with easier access through Kolkata.

The launch of the Kolkata–Shanghai route marks a further step in IndiGo’s international expansion. As demand for cross-border travel grows, such direct connections are likely to play an important role in improving regional mobility and economic engagement.
