Official Reactions

Former world No. 1 shooter and Olympian Anjali Bhagwat said the format introduced a competitive environment that can help athletes adapt to high-pressure situations similar to international events.

Ex-Olympian Deepali Deshpande described the league as a collaborative effort and indicated that organisers plan to further refine its structure in future editions.

National shooting coach Ronak Pandit highlighted the league’s role in broadening the sport’s reach and making it more accessible to a wider audience.

Context / Background

The Maharashtra Shooting League follows a franchise-based model, similar to other domestic sports leagues, aimed at combining competitive sport with spectator appeal. It is among the early state-level initiatives after similar efforts in other regions, including Karnataka.

Such formats are designed to create structured competition for shooters beyond traditional tournaments, while also providing visibility to talent from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

Public Impact

For athletes, especially those from smaller towns, the league offers exposure, competitive experience, and potential pathways to national-level events. It also provides a platform for interaction with established shooters and coaches.

For the sport, the initiative could help increase public engagement and encourage grassroots participation, which is considered important for long-term development.

The successful completion of the inaugural Maharashtra Shooting League signals growing interest in structured, franchise-based formats in shooting sports. Organisers and stakeholders have indicated that future editions may build on this model, with an aim to strengthen the pipeline of talent and expand the sport’s reach across the country.
