Hyderabad’s Sky Roars: Will Heavy Rain Flood the City?

Hyderabad, July 18, 2025 – The city woke up to dark clouds and loud thunder today as heavy rain poured across many areas, causing waterlogging and traffic jams. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Hyderabad and nearby districts could see more intense showers and thunderstorms on July 19, raising fears of flooding in low-lying areas.

This afternoon, places like Kukatpally, Begumpet, and Chandrayangutta saw heavy rainfall, with Kukatpally recording 93 mm of rain by evening. The sudden downpour caught many commuters off guard, leaving roads like Raj Bhavan Road, Khairatabad, and Erragadda flooded. Traffic came to a standstill in busy areas like Hi-Tec City and Banjara Hills, with vehicles stuck for hours.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Hyderabad, predicting thunderstorms with gusty winds of 30-40 kmph in areas like Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, and Vikarabad. “Heavy rain is likely to continue tonight and tomorrow, especially in the evening,” said K. Nagarathna, head of the Meteorological Centre in Hyderabad. She advised people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and disaster response teams are working to clear water from roads and remove fallen trees. However, many residents are worried about the city’s drainage system, which often struggles during heavy rains. “Every monsoon, our streets turn into rivers. The government needs to fix the drains,” said Anil Kumar, a shopkeeper in Balanagar.

The heavy rain has also disrupted power supply in some areas due to fallen trees and damaged electric poles. In rural parts of Telangana, like Kamareddy and Sangareddy, farmers are concerned about crops getting damaged due to waterlogging.

For the next few days, Hyderabadis should brace for cloudy skies and more rain. The temperature is expected to stay between 22°C and 32°C, offering some relief from the heat but adding to the humidity. The IMD suggests keeping umbrellas handy and avoiding low-lying areas prone to flooding.

As the city faces this stormy weather, residents are urged to stay safe, plan travel carefully, and keep updated with weather alerts. Will Hyderabad’s roads handle the rain, or will the city see more chaos? Only time will tell as the monsoon tests the city’s preparedness.
